It seems natural for Guillermo del Toro to take over where Peter Jackson left off, and now The Hollywood Reporter says a deal for Del Toro to direct back-to-back installments of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit could happen very soon.

In addition to being one of the most in demand directors alive - not to mention on of the very few who so closely resembles Milton from Office Space - Del Toro is also a wise choice sylistically. His work on the Oscar-nominated Pan's Labyrinth revealed his storytelling abilities more than previous efforts, but even...

In the latest comment in the controversy surrounding a proposed movie based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, New Line head Robert Shaye told that the studio won't work with Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson on that film or any other film. Ever. At least not as long as Shaye is in charge.

Shaye's comments marked the first time a New Line executive has commented publicly on the fracas since Jackson announced that he has pulled out of the project and also appears to harden New Line's position against Jackson.

"I do not want to make a...

As Lord of the Rings fans mounted a protest following word that New Line had dropped Peter Jackson from consideration as director of The Hobbit and another Lord of the Rings prequel, producer Saul Zaentz has given assurances that Jackson will indeed direct the two films. A German website, Elbenwald.de, posted an interview with Zaentz, who acquired the rights to the works of the late Rings writer, J.R.R. Tolkien, in 1976 (the Saul Zaentz Company owns Tolkien Enterprises), in which Zaentz says, "It will definitely be shot by Peter...

Despite recent drama surrounding the planned big-screen adaptation of Halo, Microsoft is still determined to make the movie a reality. After Fox and Universal, the two studios that had been co-financing the flick, dropped out earlier this week, Microsoft has begun shopping it around.

According to today's Variety, Microsoft is focusing their partnering efforts on Warner Bros. and Paramount, partially due to complex relational issues with the other major studios. Sony is out because of the PlayStation. Disney is iffy due to Apple's Steve Jobs...

Josh Olson, who was nominated for an Academy Award last year for his acclaimed graphic novel adaptation A History of Violence, has been officially signed to write the screenplay for the Peter Jackson-produced adaptation of Bungie's Halo. Although there has been no announcement yet, Josh broke the news during recent speeches in Philadelphia and Michigan, and has confirmed it personally. HoV was not an especially faithful adaptation of its source material, but many considered it superior, so this could be good or bad depending on how much of a...

It's game over for Universal's and Fox's participation in the feature adaptation of Microsoft's "Halo."

Both of the studios that agreed to co-finance the screen adaptation of the popular Microsoft game have abruptly backed out of the picture. While rumors had the studios concerned over a budget that was rising above the original projected $135 million pricetag, the filmmakers said the double defection came after U and Fox played hardball and unsuccessfully tried to get the filmmakers and Microsoft to reduce their profit...

Peter Jackson is already being dogged by one tricky aspect of the Dambusters story that he will turn into a $76 million film next year – a racial slur.

Wing Commander Guy Gibson, head of the British mission that destroyed German dams in World War II, had a dog called Nigger. The dog features in the 1951 book The Dam Busters and the 1954 film of the same name – both sources for Jackson's Dambusters to be shot in Wellington and Britain next year.

Jackson said his team would tread carefully over the name but had yet to decide what to...

The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is to remake classic British war film The Dam Busters.

The project is due to start filming next year, with a budget of $30-40m.

Jackson will produce the movie, with King Kong animator Christian Rivers in the director's chair.

Jackson said it would be "as authentic as possible and as close to the spirit of the original as possible".

The 1954 film told the true story of how Britain developed bouncing bombs to destroy German dams in World War II.
